The xB is Scion’s boxy multi-purpose wagon and one of the two models that
launched Scion as an all-new brand for Toyota. Scion is geared towards the
youth market, offering highly customizable vehicles with generous standard
equipment for a value-oriented price. Unveiled at the 2007 Chicago Auto
Show, the all-new 2008 xB is bigger in size but retains its distinct
box-like styling. The wheelbase has increased by four inches, the overall
length is a foot longer, the overall width is almost three inches wider but
the height is more than an inch shorter. The interior features 60/40 split
rear seats that fold flat and the front seats fully recline for increased
cargo space. The 2008 Scion xB receives a huge power upgrade over its
predecessor with a 158-horsepower 2.4-liter dual overhead cam four-cylinder
engine with Variable Valve Timing—the same engine found in the tC coupe. The
engine delivers 162 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm and it can be mated to a
five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic with sequential
shifting. Another upgrade over the previous generation, the xB now rides on
16-inch steel wheels with larger brakes for more stopping power. The
interior offers a number of storage units, a driver’s right armrest has been
added and the audio system has been upgraded to include standard rear head
unit outputs to allow external amps to boost power to the front and rear
speakers and subwoofers.
The redesigned xB is wider and longer. The new 2.4-liter
four-cylinder has more power, but worse fuel economy. The ride has
improved and handling is responsive. The gauges are still centered
on the dash. The rear seat is enormous and the cargo area is large.
Visibility is impaired by low windows and thick roof pillars.
Curtain air bags and ESC are standard.
